At this point, I don't know any more about Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers than anyone else does. However, Bill Frist's comments about her concern me:
"Ms. Miers is honest and hard working and understands the importance of judicial restraint and the limited role of a judge to interpret the law and not legislate from the bench."
One of the most important functions of the judicial branch of the government is to check and balance the executive and legislative branches, and the Supreme Court is the most senior judicial body in the country. Quite frankly, I don't want anyone sitting on that bench to think of him- or herself as having a limited role.
I can't imagine a nominee for the presidency (or Congress, for that matter) being praised on his or her understanding of the office's limitations. |
